Ukulele
The ukulele is considered the native instrument of Hawaii by many. In actuality, it was introduced in the 19th Century by Portuguese sailors and immigrants who brought their machete to the islands on their ships. It is a four-stringed member of the guitar family, and comes in four sizes: soprano, concerto, tenor, and baritone, though with the popularity of the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, size, shape, and tone are modified.
The ukulele is a wonderful beginning instrument for children and adults, as it is small, cost-efficient, and contains four strings instead of six. Small children and wary teenagers and adults are able to easily work their fingers through the frets and strings, creating cords without stress to their fingers and hand muscles. Music literacy, musicality, fine motor skills, strumming techniques, classical and folk songs are learned with ease.
